CAPTAIN AMERICA #42
I’ve loved this book since it started, but after Steve Rogers death I’ve started to fade. Steve Rogers was the heart of the Marvel Universe and has been my favorite character in Marvel for years. After his death I took slight solace in the fact that Bucky(Winter Soldier) was going to take his place. For awhile there it was all brand new and exciting, but something was missing for me. This large over arching story has been the best Marvel’s had in years, and it even managed to dodge the awful event stink Marvel’s been drenched in for about four years now. That being said with this issue #42, and this story started(Cap dying and Bucky taking over) happened in issue #25…this has been a kinda long story. It’s weird that I can say that I’m so glad this story is finally over, but I say that because it’s been long overdue to have this story move on. This issue wraps up the Sharon Carter pregnancy, Bucky taking his rightful place in the spotlight, and Red Skull’s plan, very nicely. For a story that’s gone on for about 2 years I expected it to go out with a bit of a l let down. I didn’t think I could be okay with a character whose not as big a figure as Steve Rogers, but Brubaker did it. I loved every minute of this and this was a great ending for a epic story.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN #52
Good end to a two issue story that made me miss the good old random silly days the companies used to have. The scene with Lil Superman saving the day was great because it just shows you what Superman is great for. I loved the lil villains getting a taste of real violence and going all out.

SUPERMAN #680
When has Superman been a dick? It happens everyonce and awhile, when the writer doesn’t get Superman. Well James Robinson, the guy people hail for STARMAN, has gotten his characters mixed up. Superman’s not a jerk, Batman’s a jerk but it makes sense. Also with all the work Geoff Johns and Kurt Busiek did to help Superman been seen as a smart guy, Robinson has seen to it to dumb him down again. Also the fact that Krypto can fight magic characters when Superman can’t makes no sense. The only shining light is that this arc is over and hopefully with Robinson working together so closely with Johns for the next story, maybe Johns will do the scripting and heavy lifting for it. I hope Robinson is only allowed to toss out ideas for Geoff to shoot down and make good.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED
Alright, I am on the record with loving the demo for this game(found my blog linked and mentioned on a few different websites). Do I still think this is the best thing Star Wars? Well in a quick word: no, but it does have it’s strong points. Before I get into the bad parts, I have to go into the good. The story for this game is very good, it fits very well into the space between Clone Wars and Episode 4. The story does a interesting job of making the rebellion a idea of the emperor that takes a life of it’s own,which is kinda mind blowing. This revelation adds a very awesome chunk to the Star Wars mythos. I liked the idea of being this apperentice, but I really wish you could have created your own apperentice character(Like the utterly epic KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC franchise). Just that little bit of customization would have made the game easier to dive into and feel invested in the story. Now to the bad…This game has been in development for a long time, it’s widely known (in gaming circles) as the most expensive game to date. With that I would have expected less bugs and glitches. I also have to say that the force powers were fun but couple that with a infuriating lack of a real targetting system for said powers and there’s a lot of tossed controllers in your future.
The game looks like it’s expensive but the level design is basic and generic. It was bad enough to have to go through these long boring levels once, but in true “we don’t feel like expanding this anymore” fashion…you have to go back to these levels and be tortured again. I don’t know if anybody else feels this way, but in all the movies and a light saber has been shown to be able to cut through metal(in the game as well) but you have to slice a storm trooper four times to kill him? What? Why can’t a Star Wars game to just go with the established idea of the light saber? Speaking of that I loved the powers but with all the enemies the game play boils down to you getting shot by a ton of annoying characters and with your health bar low you run around and try and kill stragglers to gain more health…that’s very annoying. The Jedi battles are pretty much a fight against a enemy with a larger health bar that get away with using certain force powers on you that your inexplicably unable to do to them.
The game’s story is really good, but I just wish I didn’t have to play through the levels to get the full story. So if you find yourself on Felucia fighting a ton of annoyning blue jedi powered things, put down the controller and pick up the novel or the graphic novel…it’s more fun and you don’t have to deal with the annoyning parts of this game.

TNA IMPACT VIDEO GAME
I’m a die hard wrestling video game fan. I’ve played wrestling games since the arcade Wrestlemania game in the 80’s. Once I got the chance to play as Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and The Ultimate Warrior I was hooked. Now there have been some very good wrestling games(WWE SMACKDOWN series) and the downright perfect(WWE NO MERCY, WRESTLEMANIA 2000, WCW VS NWO) and the downright awful(WCW BACKSTAGE, WWF ATTITUDE). There’s a history of awesome controls, but sometimes out of nowhere someone will totally for go that perfect model and make their own and fail. Now TNA IMPACT, isn’t the worst…it’s barely pretty good. The graphics are very, very good. But when you get to the gameplay, it feels like a fighting game…and not a very fun one. The problem I have with the TNA IMPACT brand and video game is that the moves never really feel like they’re powerful. The fact that when I hit a big move the opponent doesn’t spend half a second on the ground, unless they’re stunned, is ridiculous. Now when we get to the game itself, there’s nothing really there, I have to play through the pretty dumb storyline to unlock bubba ray…really? There’s no belts in exhibition mode, which makes exhibition matches pretty boring. I’m not sure what MIDWAY was thinking, it’s not as if there has never been a wrestling game. There is proof that a control system can be made that feels perfect, but they decided to make it so that I have to cramp my hand to perform normal moves, that are used alot.
It also doesn’t help to have the action button do so much. I try to pin someone near the ropes and I roll out of the ring. I have to say that the animations are excellent and look very fluid…too bad the game doesn’t really fit the awesome animations. It does feel great to be able to bounce off ropes and out of the ring without having to wait for the game to get ready for it. Now as good as the the animations are it doesn’t mean they work all the time. The counter system, when it works, looks insane and you can reverse any move(in theory). When it doesn’t work it’s awful, you actually have to time the button press after the button shows up on screen which is very odd. The tag team matches and system are totally broken. With a very lackluster game build, I don’t understand why it was rushed out. I read a interview on IGN.COM with the makers of the game and they kept saying in so many words”No we don’t have that in the game, but we’ll put it in the next one” Well if this game isn’t well received(and I’m very sure it hasn’t been) what makes you think your going to get another shot. I always learned that first impressions are lasting ones, and I don’t have a very good first impression about the TNA IMPACT game.

CONS: CONTROLS ARE RESPONSIVE ONE MINUTE AND WACKY THE NEXT, LACK OF ROBUST GAME FEATURES MAKE THIS A SKELETON OF A “COULDA” BEEN VERY GOOD GAME, DOESN’T UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FIGHTING GAME AND A WRESTLING GAME WITH FIGHTING.

MY TWO CENTS:
I‘m glad that Jeremy Piven won best supporting actor in a comedy. I found it fitting that he won the award the same day that his character, ARI GOLD, had his best episode so far. I’m a huge fan of 30 ROCK, and I don’t know many people who are so their wins lifted my spirits. And I’m just going to say, I hate MAD MEN, I don’t understand why it’s so loved…it’s a show about douche bags that have no redeeming qualities at all, and it’s boring beyond belief.

PICK OF THE WEEK
It was a tighter race than even I expected. I saved this book for last because I didn’t want to be unfair to the other books out this week because this was the one I was looking forward to the most…and for awhile there I was worried that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations because I was reading some really good books. Then I started to read and it quickly reminded me why this is my favorite book coming out right now. Geoff Johns gets Superman and his world. It’s almost as if Geoff goes into my mind and sees what I like and puts it on paper. I felt the same way when he was on FLASH and on every other book he’s done(Avengers, Hawkman, JSA, JLA). I always liked the idea of Brainiac because he is a villain that Superman can’t even hope to reach, he’s a cold-unfeeling robot. Now I’ve been on record saying that SUPERGIRL’s book hasn’t been really good or even half good, for a while but I still read it. With Geoff Johns writing Supergirl, you feel like she’s a real girl. I loved the fact that she’s afraid of Brainiac but still fights because that’s what Clark would do. Perfect. But the usual Geoff Johns jaw dropper moment happened later when Brainiac shrinks Metropolis(or at least a part of it) for his collection. Geoff Johns has effectively made Brainiac one of Superman’s most dangerous villains again. He also has done his slick retcon, with the revelation that Kara’s parents are actually still alive and have been shrunken down in Brainiac’s collection. Also Kara was sent after Clark was sent, nice little tid bit to add. Although I am not enjoying the JAMES ROBINSON run on SUPERMAN, I always say “at least I have ACTION COMICS” and once again Geoff has left me speechless in how stellar his run has been. Thank you Geoff, your single handedly keeping my favorite Superhero afloat. Now hopefully I will like the upcoming storyline with the Kryptonians on earth, although every inch of me has a problem with what it means…but I’m down as long as Geoff is involved.

This storyline is just reminding me why I love Tim Drake. He’s almost smarter than BATMAN. The things DC does to this kid are mind boggling but they keep giving him awesome moments to prove why he’s on the top of the teen hero scene(just wish Superboy was here too).

*anybody who knows me know I say “That was poo poo” alot. It’s one of a few slogans I repeat. So I’m changing my bad book title. To “THAT WAS POO POO”, because this is my blog and I can do what I want.
MIGHTY AVENGERS #18
This book has never been a favorite of mine, because it always starred an Avengers team I couldn’t get behind because they were Tony Stark’s team. So when they started to do these flash back stories for Secret Invasion I was excited…but then I would find out that Secret Invasion bored me to tears and I didn’t care about the stories that happened in the Marvel Universe but were never told because that would have spoiled this story…boo. I just don’t care anymore, I just want this to be over so maybe I can salvage some Marvel love. A love which is evaporating the longer I’m battered by these crappy events they keep pumping out. I have to admit I’ve almost liked a couple of these stories, but this one means nothing and was a total wast of 22 pages.

Episode 4- The Bubble
Episode Description: Harry (Rob Estes) reveals that West Beverly’s theater director is no longer able to direct the school musical, “Spring Awakening,” prompting Tabitha (Jessica Walter) to offer her services as the new director, much to Annie (Shenae Grimes), Harry and Debbie’s (Lori Loughlin) surprise. Tabitha’s approach with Adrianna (guest star Jessica Lowndes, “Greek”) doesn’t go over well, so Kelly (guest star Jennie Garth) convinces Brenda (guest star Shannen Doherty) to take over as guest director of the play. Kelly and Brenda get into a heated conversation about Kelly’s involvement with Ryan (Ryan Eggold) and how it may affect her son. Dixon (Tristan Wilds) is worried about the family’s financial situation and talks with Nat (guest star Joe E. Tata, “Beverly Hills, 90210″) at the Peach Pit about a part-time job. Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord) confronts her father’s mistress and is shocked when she learns the direction in which her parents’ marriage is headed. Annie is still upset with Ty (guest star Adam Gregory) and agrees to a date with Ethan (Dustin Milligan), only to be disappointed by its outcome. Michael Steger and Jessica Stroup also star.

Good episode. I now know what makes me happy with this show. Give me some DIXON/SILVER action and I’m in. I did really like the ETHAN/ANNIE stuff, because they finally put a name to what anybody in a relationship or with a friend in a relationship knows all about: THE BUBBLE. I didn’t dig the way Jenny went after Brenda when she really didn’t do anything, but as the scene went on I saw what they where going for. And the fact they finally revealed who the father of Kelly’s baby was good, I thought I was going to get crazy hearing ‘He’ and ‘Him’ for the entire storyline. More crap keeps piling on NAOMI, I’m hoping they come off it a bit and give her something else to do. I’m wondering if we’re ever going to get back into the fact that DIXON and ANNIE’s dad has a kid out there somewhere? It’s been two episodes without even a mention of it.
CHARLES’ GRADE: B+
PROS: We’re finally moving along with the overt DIXON/SILVER thing they kept starting then stopping mid episode.
CONS: I think they need to involve some of the other characters more, NAVID didn’t even show up at all this episode.

EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Annie (Shenae Grimes) and Dixon’s (Tristan Wilds) Friday night plans come to a screeching halt when they learn that Harry (Rob Estes) and Debbie (Lori Loughlin) have planned a family bowling night. When Ethan (Dustin Milligan), Navid (Michael Steger) and Silver (Jessica Stroup) show up at the bowling alley, Harry and Debbie realize they have lost control of their family outing but encourage their kids to spend time with their friends. Ty (guest star Adam Gregory) shows up at the bowling alley, causing Annie to choose between spending time with him or Ethan. Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord) deals with a disappointing evening with her father and destroys a gift from him in a violent rage. Dixon discovers Silver asleep in her car, prompting Kelly (guest star Jennie Garth) to confront their mother Jackie (guest star Ann Gillespie, “Beverly Hills, 90210″) about the repercussions of her alcoholic behavior. Jessica Walter also stars.

I like this show…I can admit it. It’s actually interesting because these kids aren’t all total douche bags who switch personalities every episode(I’m looking at you GOSSIP GIRL). The characters just work in this show. I love everybody, but I was glad that we finally get into SILVER’s story. SILVER is by far my favorite female character in the show, she’s the kind of girl that nerds like me wish where more prevelant in the world…lol. The story between ETHAN and ANNIE is interesting but I can see it getting annoying if they keep playing it, but I do like the chemistry between both the actors. Solid episode that shows that the “bitchy” character, NAOMI, has some issues and she isn’t a one note character.
CHARLES’ GRADE:B+
PROS: I just am drawn to the screen when this show is on, the actors on this show are so talented that I think they won’t get the respect for they deserve. Just a much better show than Gossip Girl and the other american teenage shows.
CONS: With the show just getting into it’s stride I don’t have too many problems with the show…as of right now
