STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED REVIEW

THE FORCE UNLEASHED

STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED

Alright, I am on the record with loving the demo for this game(found my blog linked and mentioned on a few different websites). Do I still think this is the best thing Star Wars? Well in a quick word: no, but it does have it’s strong points. Before I get into the bad parts, I have to go into the good. The story for this game is very good, it fits very well into the space between Clone Wars and Episode 4. The story does a interesting job of making the rebellion a idea of the emperor that takes a life of it’s own, which is kinda mind blowing. This revelation adds a very awesome chunk to the Star Wars mythos. I liked the idea of being this apperentice, but I really wish you could have created your own apperentice character(Like the utterly epic KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC franchise). Just that little bit of customization would have made the game easier to dive into and feel invested in the story. Now to the bad…This game has been in development for a long time, it’s widely known (in gaming circles) as the most expensive game to date. With that I would have expected less bugs and glitches. I also have to say that the force powers were fun but couple that with a infuriating lack of a real targetting system for said powers and there’s a lot of tossed controllers in your future.

The game looks like it’s expensive but the level design is basic and generic. It was bad enough to have to go through these long boring levels once, but in true “we don’t feel like expanding this anymore” fashion…you have to go back to these levels and be tortured again. I don’t know if anybody else feels this way, but in all the movies and a light saber has been shown to be able to cut through metal(in the game as well) but you have to slice a storm trooper four times to kill him? What? Why can’t a Star Wars game to just go with the established idea of the light saber? Speaking of that I loved the powers but with all the enemies the game play boils down to you getting shot by a ton of annoying characters and with your health bar low you run around and try and kill stragglers to gain more health…that’s very annoying. The Jedi battles are pretty much a fight against a enemy with a larger health bar that get away with using certain force powers on you that your inexplicably unable to do to them.

The game’s story is really good, but I just wish I didn’t have to play through the levels to get the full story. So if you find yourself on Felucia fighting a ton of annoyning blue jedi powered things, put down the controller and pick up the novel or the graphic novel…it’s more fun and you don’t have to deal with the annoyning parts of this game.

CHARLES’ GRADE:C-

PROS:THE CUT SCENES AND STORY ARE REALLY GOOD.

CONS: OVERALL GAME PLAY PROBLEMS AND GLITCHES MAKE THE GAME ANNOYING TO PLAY

This should be fun, not annoyning

This should be fun, not annoying

TNA IMPACT VIDEO GAME REVIEW

TNA IMPACT VIDEO GAME

TNA IMPACT VIDEO GAME

I’m a die hard wrestling video game fan. I’ve played wrestling games since the arcade Wrestlemania game in the 80’s. Once I got the chance to play as Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and The Ultimate Warrior I was hooked. Now there have been some very good wrestling games(WWE SMACKDOWN series) and the downright perfect(WWE NO MERCY, WRESTLEMANIA 2000, WCW VS NWO) and the downright awful(WCW BACKSTAGE, WWF ATTITUDE). There’s a history of awesome controls, but sometimes out of nowhere someone will totally for go that perfect model and make their own and fail. Now TNA IMPACT, isn’t the worst…it’s barely pretty good. The graphics are very, very good. But when you get to the gameplay, it feels like a fighting game…and not a very fun one. The problem I have with the TNA IMPACT brand and video game is that the moves never really feel like they’re powerful. The fact that when I hit a big move the opponent doesn’t spend half a second on the ground, unless they’re stunned, is ridiculous. Now when we get to the game itself, there’s nothing really there, I have to play through the pretty dumb storyline to unlock bubba ray…really? There’s no belts in exhibition mode, which makes exhibition matches pretty boring. I’m not sure what MIDWAY was thinking, it’s not as if there has never been a wrestling game. There is proof that a control system can be made that feels perfect, but they decided to make it so that I have to cramp my hand to perform normal moves, that are used alot.

It also doesn’t help to have the action button do so much. I try to pin someone near the ropes and I roll out of the ring. I have to say that the animations are excellent and look very fluid…too bad the game doesn’t really fit the awesome animations. It does feel great to be able to bounce off ropes and out of the ring without having to wait for the game to get ready for it. Now as good as the the animations are it doesn’t mean they work all the time. The counter system, when it works, looks insane and you can reverse any move(in theory). When it doesn’t work it’s awful, you actually have to time the button press after the button shows up on screen which is very odd. The tag team matches and system are totally broken. With a very lackluster game build, I don’t understand why it was rushed out. I read a interview on IGN.COM with the makers of the game and they kept saying in so many words”No we don’t have that in the game, but we’ll put it in the next one” Well if this game isn’t well received(and I’m very sure it hasn’t been) what makes you think your going to get another shot. I always learned that first impressions are lasting ones, and I don’t have a very good first impression about the TNA IMPACT game.

CHARLES’ GRADE: D

PROS: GRAPHICS ARE VERY NICE, WRESTLING MOVE ANIMATIONS ARE GREAT(WHEN THEY AREN’T HAMPERED BY THE CONTROLS)

CONS: CONTROLS ARE RESPONSIVE ONE MINUTE AND WACKY THE NEXT, LACK OF ROBUST GAME FEATURES MAKE THIS A SKELETON OF A “COULDA” BEEN VERY GOOD GAME, DOESN’T UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FIGHTING GAME AND A WRESTLING GAME WITH FIGHTING.

THIS IS THE ONLY SPECIAL MATCH IN THE GAME...SHOULDNT IT BE FUN?

MY TWO CENTS:

I‘m glad that Jeremy Piven won best supporting actor in a comedy. I found it fitting that he won the award the same day that his character, ARI GOLD, had his best episode so far. I’m a huge fan of 30 ROCK, and I don’t know many people who are so their wins lifted my spirits. And I’m just going to say, I hate MAD MEN, I don’t understand why it’s so loved…it’s a show about douche bags that have no redeeming qualities at all, and it’s boring beyond belief.

WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO: COMICS 9/24/08

LOOKING FORWARD TO

DC COMICS

TRINITY #17

TRINITY #17

Description :Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman lead the heroes of the DCU against the machinations of their malevolent counterparts, resulting in a cataclysmic event that will change the world, but not like anyone involved expects. Plus, Hawkman and Gangbuster make their move to rescue Tarot, and Konvikt breaks loose.”

  • This book has been getting steadily better and better. I love Busiek’s take on the DC TRINITY. I really miss him on SUPERMAN, because that book has lost all the steam he built up.
SUPERMAN/BATMAN #52

SUPERMAN/BATMAN #52

Description : “In the second half of “Li’l Leaguers,” The Man of Steel and The Dark Knight must team up with the Li’l League to battle an army of Li’l Villains. Then, the Li’l Villains meet some of their grownup counterparts as Li’l Lex hatches his plan to take over the world. Don’t miss this issue’s shock ending! “

  • I was looking forward to last issue, but it exceeded even my high expectations. So hopefully it just gets better and better.

TEEN TITANS #63

TEEN TITANS #63

Description : “Bombshell is back! But wait — isn’t she dead? Whatever the answer, one thing’s for sure: the Teen Titans are gonna have their hands full! Also in this issue: Wonder Girl can feel something terrible on the horizon coming for her and there’s nothing she can do to stop it!”

  • This may be a pretty weak team, but I love all the characters involved.

SUPERMAN #680

SUPERMAN #680

Description : ““Atlas,” part 4! The grand finale of the Atlas epic finds Superman’s foe seemingly victorious! With Superman down for the count, who can stand in the way of the city’s supposed new ruler? Enter Krypto, (Super)man’s best friend, who will do anything to protect his master. Don’t miss Krypto at his most heroic, a worthy addition to the Superman Family – and a very good boy. Plus: A new, magical character settles in Metropolis, just when Superman needs him most. “

  • I’m not looking forward to this for the normal reasons. I have hated James Robinson on this book for 3 months now. I’m just glad this storyline will be over and have high hopes for the next storyline to give him time to actually get a handle on these characters because the guy is writing everyone strangely. The only bright spot of his lackluster run so far, is his take on Krypto. I just wish Busiek was back on this book.

MARVEL

FANTASTIC FOUR #560

FANTASTIC FOUR #560

Description : “THE DEATH OF THE INVISIBLE WOMAN! Part three: EXODUS “Well, let’s start with the good news. The good news is that the Earth DIDN’T die in the early part of the twenty-first century. It actually survived another five hundred years, thanks to the efforts of Doctor Reed Richards. But when the end times came, it was worse than we imagined. Twelve billion people starved to death, half the world’s cities drowned in the seas and cancer and disease affected almost every living creature. The rich and the powerful disappeared overnight, leaving behind a lawless mess that the world’s remaining super heroes bound together to protect. But it was HOPELESS and we KNEW it. Hence the reason I built the big MACHINE…””

  • I have to say I didn’t care for the first arc of Millar’s run, but this second arc is what I expected from Mark Millar on Fantastic Four…Crazy ideas and strange going on’s works for the Fantastic Four.
DAREDEVIL #111

DAREDEVIL #111

Description : “Be there when Matt Murdock first encounters a shocking new face — Lady Bullseye! Who is she? Where did she come from? What does she want? And will she be a foe to Daredevil…or a friend? We can’t make a peep yet, but it’s the perfect jumping-on point as an alarming new chapter begins in the acclaimed DAREDEVIL run by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark! LADY BULLSEYE!!”

  • Marvel’s starting to come up with ideas that wouldn’t have even worked in the 90’s (Anti-Venom I’m looking at you) but hopefully Brubaker can make this idea not suck.
CAPTAIN AMERICA #42

CAPTAIN AMERICA #42

Description : “The final chapter of the epic “”Death of Captain America”" saga is here! The New Captain America, the Falcon, the Black Widow, Sharon Carter – all in a final showdown with the Red Skull and his minions for the future of America!”

  • I will admit that I love this book, but not nearly as much as when Steve Rogers was Cap. I love Bucky, but to me he’ll never be Captain America…he’s just B.C(Bucky Cap) to me.
NOVA #17

NOVA #17

Description : “Back on Earth in the middle of the biggest and most insidious alien invasion ever, Richard Rider battles to safeguard the only people he can trust… his family! Rich’s kid brother now works at the famous Project Pegasus… and that means he’s right in the Skrulls’ firing line! It’s blistering cosmic-powered action as the last Nova Centurion stands against an entire Skrull strike force hell-bent on securing Project Pegasus’s secret weapons for themselves! And take it from us, the last page shocker will knock Nova upside his helmet!”

  • I’ve loved the Marvel space books(aside from the awful jaunt the X-men took under Brubaker), maybe because they didn’t take place on the currently stupid earth antics of the Marvel Universe. Hopefully NOVA stays off earth a bit longer so he doesn’t catch the suck disease from the earth bound stories.
