Will ‘THE GRAYSONS’ fly or will they fall
Variety reported this morning news that America’s The CW network has greenlit “The Graysons,” a pilot for a new live-action television series based on Dick Grayson, the first of Batman’s sidekicks, courtesy of the Executive Producers of “Smallville” and “Supernatural.”
According to the report, the producers have “come up with an original take” on the character whereby he confronts challenges concerning “first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up” before becoming partners with Batman and assuming the iconic mantle of Robin, similar to the approach taken with Clark Kent/Superman in “Smallville.” Variety also indicates the character will be known as “D.J.,” rather than his traditional name of “Dick.”
The “Graysons” series would be the network’s second stab at the Batman mythos, following the widely derided “Birds of Prey.”
Execs Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson have also written “Tell Me” and “But I’m A Cheerleader,” respectively, and will work with filmmaker/producer McG (“Terminator: Salvation”).
My two cents:
I don’t know how to feel about this. I grew up with Tim Drake as my Robin. The only bit of Dick Grayson I know is him as NIGHTWING. I hope this show isn’t going to boil down to a traveling circus going around and Dick solving trouble in the random towns.
