PICK OF THE WEEK: COMICS FOR 10/08/08

PICK OF THE WEEK

ACTION COMICS #870

ACTION COMICS #870

This storyline has made Brainiac a hardcore villain, who woulda known? I remember the first time I saw Brainiac fight Superman in the old Superman cartoons in the 80’s. I liked him, but never really thought of him the way you think of a DOOMSDAY or LEX LUTHOR. Brainiac has never seemed to warrant the high status the comics tried to give him, that was until GEOFF JOHNS got his hands on him. Johns made Brainiac scary and dangerous by doing nothing but thinking about the character, he didn’t really change him at all he just took the idea of the character and followed through. Now while this issue marks the end of the Brainiac storyline, it also marks a period I kinda hoped would never hit the comics. Pa Kent has finally died. It was done in such a low key way it actually makes the death stick more, it didn’t put up a cover with a bunch of characters faces asking which one of Superman’s main cast dies today. The actual cover is pretty heart breaking, it’s a simple image of a man who’s just lost the only father he’s known. My dad is still alive, but I can instantly imagine the hurt of losing your dad, it’s something we all know has to happen but wish wouldn’t. This was a really good, heart breaking issue.

DETECTIVE COMICS #870

DETECTIVE COMICS #849

I really like the character of HUSH and his drive to destory Bruce Wayne’s life is really interesting. While the Joker is Batman’s worst enemy, HUSH is the realization of what Bruce could have been if he didn’t have Alfred and good parents.

THAT WAS POO POO

WONDER WOMAN #25

WONDER WOMAN #25

What the hell? I really used to like this book, but with each Gail Simone issue I’m really starting to hate this book. Why does this always happen with Wonder Woman? DC gets somebody who has a fresh vision of Wonder Woman and it’s great, but then all of a sudden they bring in someone who takes Wonder Woman back to the old boring stuff. This issue ended the two issues too long, two part stoy of Wonder Woman going to Hollywood. While in Hollywood she visits the set of a movie made about her, which boils down to Wonder Woman fighting some chick who thinks she’s Snow White…what in the hell? I thought the stupid Wonder Woman meeting Beowolf and fighting some demon thing in Washington was dumb, but this takes the cake. Just out and out poo poo.
